Dover School District Update: Curriculum Development, Technology Integration, and Inclusive Education

The July 21, 2020, update from the Dover School District provided an insightful look into the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance curriculum development, integrate technology for seamless learning, and embrace inclusivity in education. These initiatives reflect the district’s proactive approach to preparing for the upcoming school year and addressing the evolving needs of its students.

Curriculum Development Progress

The district’s curriculum writing teams are making significant strides in creating new course materials using the Atlas system. By adopting the Understanding by Design curricular framework, educators are building units that emphasize thoughtful and effective planning. To date:

• Writers have completed one unit per course.

• Supervisors are holding weekly check-ins to provide feedback and support.

• The completed curriculum will be reviewed with the Board’s curriculum committee in September.

These efforts reflect a commitment to delivering high-quality, well-structured educational materials that align with best practices.

Technology Rollout for Reopening

A major component of the district’s reopening plan is the procurement of 1,400 iPads through a lease purchase agreement, ensuring elementary students have the tools needed for continuity in learning. Secondary students will receive Macbooks as part of this initiative. While COVID-19 has created less-than-ideal conditions for implementing a district-wide one-to-one technology program, the district remains focused on ensuring students stay connected.

To support this transition:

• A new Technology Integration Specialist position, funded by the CARES Act, is being introduced. This role will:

• Assist teachers and students in developing technology skills for classroom use.

• Provide video tutorials and training for parents to help them navigate the technology their children will use.

• Strengthen the district’s overall Technology Support Team.

Fostering Inclusivity in Curriculum

In response to public inquiries about including topics such as civics, gender, and race in the curriculum, the district emphasized its commitment to inclusivity and representation. Recent state guidelines mandate the inclusion of contributions from LGBTQ+ individuals and people with disabilities, as well as adherence to updated educational standards.

The transition to the Atlas system presents an opportunity for the district to:

• Evaluate how diverse groups are represented in the curriculum.

• Expand and revise content to better meet the needs of all students.

• Align with new standards issued by the Department of Education, with timelines set for implementation.

This work is in its early stages, but the district’s focus on inclusivity and equity signals a forward-thinking approach to education.

Looking Ahead

As the district prepares for the uncertainties of the upcoming school year, its focus on robust curriculum development, technology integration, and inclusivity ensures that Dover is well-equipped to meet the challenges ahead. With these initiatives, the district aims to create a learning environment that is innovative, equitable, and supportive for all students.
