Dover School District Update: New CTE Program, iPad Rollout, and Preschool Expansion
The November 17, 2020, update from the Dover School District showcased exciting advancements, including the launch of a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, a major iPad distribution for elementary students, and plans to expand preschool opportunities. These initiatives reflect the district’s ongoing commitment to innovation and student success.
New CTE Program at Dover High School
Dover High School is introducing a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in partnership with the County College of Morris (CCM). CTE programs, endorsed by the New Jersey Department of Education, provide students with both academic and technical skills to prepare them for college or careers.
The first CTE program, focused on Graphic Arts, offers students the opportunity to take the following courses:
• Drawing I
• 2D Design
• Introduction to Computer Graphics
• Computer Graphics I
Students who complete the program will earn 12 college credits from CCM, giving them a head start on their post-secondary education. To support this program, a CTE advisory committee has been formed, including administrators, teachers, admissions officers, students, and parents.
The district sees this partnership as a foundation for future opportunities and plans to expand CTE offerings in other fields. A full presentation on the program will be shared at the December meeting.
iPad Rollout for Elementary Students
A major milestone is underway as students in grades 1 through 6 receive iPads, complete with keyboards and chargers. These devices will support daily virtual learning and enhance the connection between teachers and students during remote instruction.
The success of this rollout involved tremendous teamwork:
• The Tech Department worked tirelessly to configure the devices.
• Administrative staff assisted with labeling and packaging.
• The Transportation Department ensured timely delivery to schools.
Families are reminded that hotspots are still available for those in need. Forms can be found on the district website or by contacting building administrators.
Preschool Expansion Plan
The district has submitted its Preschool Operation Plan for the 2021-2022 school year as part of its application for Preschool Expansion Aid. This plan focuses on providing the youngest learners with high-quality instruction through the Creative Curriculum and GOLD Assessments.
Highlights include:
• Continuing professional development for preschool teachers and staff to support student growth and effective instructional strategies.
• Expanded opportunities for early learners to receive top-tier education.
Special thanks were extended to Mr. Gannio for his leadership in this initiative.
Acknowledgments and Looking Ahead
I concluded the report by thanking the many staff members who played a role in these successes, from teachers and administrators to technology and transportation teams. The district continues to prioritize collaboration and innovation to enhance the educational experience for all students.
With the launch of the new CTE program, expanded access to technology, and preschool enhancements, Dover School District is paving the way for a brighter future for its students.
