May 2023: New Programs, Mental Health Awareness, and Exciting Initiatives
This month’s updates from the Dover School District highlight innovative new programs, student and staff achievements, and a continued focus on wellness and community. Here’s what’s happening across the district:
Community-Based Instruction (CBI) Program Launch
The district is proud to announce its application for the Community-Based Instruction (CBI) Project for the 2023-24 school year. This program, in partnership with The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at Rutgers University and the New Jersey DOE’s Office of Special Education, is designed to support students with disabilities as they transition from school to adult life.
The program focuses on:
• Community living skills
• Post-secondary education
• Career readiness
A dedicated Dover CBI team of eight members, including administrators, teachers, and service providers, will participate in 20 hours of intensive training and ongoing technical support. A smaller-scale version of this program is already running at Dover High School, where the Tiger Café Coffee Cart has become a hit. Students brew and deliver coffee, gaining valuable vocational skills such as money management, social interaction, and task management. Since its launch on May 4th, the cart has successfully fulfilled 40+ orders, with enthusiasm growing across the school.
Health Science Careers Program Recognition
Congratulations to the seniors in the Health Science Careers Program, who will attend the 30th Annual Student Recognition Ceremony on June 2nd at Rutgers University. These students have completed a rigorous four-year program, earning college credits from Rutgers. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and accomplishments.
Climate Change Grant and “Our Waterways” Program
The district has been awarded a Climate Change Grant to fund the Our Waterways Program, which brings environmental science to life for students. The program includes:
• Classroom lessons on watersheds and groundwater
• Hands-on stream exploration
• Analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of water quality
This experiential learning program provides students with a snapshot of their local waterway’s health and fosters discussions about protecting ecosystems. This initiative exemplifies the district’s commitment to interactive, real-world education.
Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Dover Public Schools is organizing a range of activities to prioritize student and staff well-being. Here are some highlights:
• Student Assemblies: Addressing mental health and coping strategies
• Mental Health Fairs: Providing resources and information
• Mindfulness Practices: Activities for both staff and students
• Gratitude Challenges: Encouraging positive affirmations and reflection
The district also held its first-ever staff yoga and meditation event, which was attended by 25 staff members. The next yoga session is scheduled for June 1st at North Dover, and all staff are welcome to participate.
Upcoming Anti-Bullying Program
The district is exploring a new anti-bullying program for the 2023-24 school year. In collaboration with a local certified expert, the initiative will focus on improving school culture and climate while addressing harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB). A meeting is scheduled for early June to further discuss this potential partnership.
Gratitude and Moving Forward
From hands-on learning opportunities like the Our Waterways Program to initiatives supporting mental health and inclusivity, Dover Public Schools continues to prioritize innovative education and wellness. Special thanks to our educators, community partners, and staff for making these programs possible.
