Dover School District Update: Professional Development, Student Support, and Testing Plans

The January 19, 2021, Dover School District meeting highlighted collaborative efforts to support students and staff, professional development initiatives, and updates on state and national testing schedules. These updates demonstrate the district’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and adapting to evolving needs.

Collaboration and Community Partnerships

The district emphasized its ongoing collaborations with organizations such as:

Essex Regional Educational Services Commission to support migrant students.

St. John’s Episcopal Church and other local institutions to strengthen community ties.

• Partnerships with Rutgers University, Med Lab, and Apple to enhance educational opportunities.

These partnerships underscore the district’s commitment to solidarity and community engagement, particularly during the challenges of the pandemic.

Grant Application for Professional Development on Bias and Race

The district submitted a grant application to the New Jersey State Bar Foundation to provide professional development for staff. Sessions will focus on critical topics such as:

Why We Bully

Talking About Race

Unconscious Bias

Lessons from the Amistad

These sessions aim to address timely issues, fostering a more inclusive and equitable learning environment.

Literacy and Dual Language Professional Development

The district is continuing its work with literacy consultant Melanie Brown, who has been collaborating with elementary staff on Readers and Writers Workshop and literacy development.

• Teachers participated in a survey to provide input on professional development topics and schedules, ensuring sessions meet their needs.

• Melanie’s work includes large group training, small group sessions, and classroom support, providing a comprehensive approach to literacy instruction.

Additionally, the district is preparing to launch a Dual Language Program for kindergarten. Beginning in February, staff will work with expert Elizabeth Willum to build a strong foundation for this program, which was delayed due to COVID-19 closures.

Preschool Professional Development

The district continues to expand its preschool programs with targeted professional development:

• Training sessions on supporting disabilities and promoting learning through studies were provided.

• New and existing staff will receive ongoing training, ensuring all teachers are equipped with the skills needed to foster student growth.

State and National Testing Updates

The district provided updates on testing schedules:

NJSLA, Access 2.0, and DLM Testing: Postponed until at least April 5, with district test coordinator training scheduled for March.

2021 AP Exams: The College Board has introduced a flexible testing schedule with three administration windows between May and June. Schools can mix and match testing dates to best accommodate their schedules and protocols.

The district is preparing for these assessments while remaining adaptable to any further changes.

Message of Gratitude and Reflection

As the district continues to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, gratitude was expressed for the dedication of teachers, administrators, and community members. The board emphasized the importance of professional development that addresses current needs while planning for future initiatives.

Looking Ahead

Dover School District remains committed to fostering student success, supporting staff development, and adapting to challenges with resilience and collaboration. With expanded professional development, community partnerships, and thoughtful planning, the district is poised for continued progress in 2021.
