March 2023 Updates: Recognizing Achievements, Partnerships, and Community Events

This month’s updates from the Dover School District highlight exciting student achievements, meaningful community partnerships, and efforts to enhance opportunities for both students and families. Here’s a detailed look at what’s happening across the district.

Celebrating the Seal of Biliteracy

Seventy students from Dover High School will receive the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy, a testament to their proficiency in at least one language in addition to English. This recognition from the New Jersey Department of Education underscores the value of bilingualism in education, career, and beyond. The students will be honored at the June Honors Night event hosted by the guidance department—a moment of pride for the district and community.

Supporting Enrichment with STEAM Grants

Dr. Kalina secured a Visions Credit Union Grant to enhance enrichment programs through a hands-on STEAM project. Students will work with electricity kits to build circuits that produce light, sound, and motorized motion while learning about the contributions of Thomas Edison. This innovative project emphasizes the importance of science and its real-world impact. Kudos to Dr. Kalina for leading this effort!

Promoting Health and Wellness for Staff

In partnership with the Randolph YMCA, the district is exploring discounted memberships for staff after an introductory trial period. Additionally, plans are underway to offer free yoga and meditation classes through June, based on staff interest surveys. These wellness initiatives are designed to support the physical and mental health of employees.

Technology Pilot with Apple

Dover has been selected by Apple as one of two New Jersey districts to participate in a new pilot program for device repairs. Instead of mailing devices for extensive repairs, the program will use a local vendor for pickup and delivery. This pilot aims to save technicians valuable time and reduce the duration of loaner device use, benefiting both staff and students.

Expanding Opportunities with William Paterson University

The district continues to strengthen its partnership with William Paterson University through the Aspiring Educators Program and dual enrollment courses. Eleven students have confirmed participation in the summer program, with an additional 14 expressing interest. Representatives from William Paterson will provide more details during the April board meeting, as the district aims to create more higher education pathways for students.

Prom Shop Success

The annual Prom Shop at Dover High School was a resounding success, with 250 garments distributed to students, including dresses, men’s clothing, shoes, and accessories. Recognizing the financial barriers associated with prom, the district is exploring ways to provide free or discounted services for flowers, hair, makeup, and other essentials. A second clothing selection session is planned for March to ensure all students have access to these resources. Special thanks to the National Honor Society, additional student volunteers, and staff who made this event possible.

Health Insurance Enrollment Events

In partnership with UnitedHealthcare and Zufall, the district hosted events to assist families in enrolling in health insurance through the Governor’s Cover All Kids program. Over 220 families attended, with many successfully enrolling in coverage. Families can still contact Zufall at 973-891-3425 for assistance.

Prom Shop Donations and Needs

The Prom Shop relies on community donations to provide outfits for students. Currently, there is a need for men’s suits. A special video will soon be released to teach students how to tie ties, ensuring everyone is fully prepared for prom night. If you have gowns, suits, or accessories to donate, now’s the perfect time to support this meaningful cause.

From celebrating student achievements to enhancing resources for staff and families, Dover School District is working diligently to foster a supportive and enriching environment. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the end of the school year!
