Dover School District Update: Reflection, Recognition, and Ongoing Initiatives

The November 16, 2021, Dover School District meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on progress made during the first marking period, recognize the efforts of staff and students, and share updates on exciting programs and initiatives. As the year transitions into winter, the district continues to prioritize innovation, collaboration, and community engagement.

Reflecting on 10 Weeks of Progress

With the first marking period complete, the district highlighted several significant initiatives launched at the elementary level, including:

Writer’s Workshop: An instructional shift that enhances literacy skills.

STEMscopes: A hands-on science program designed to foster curiosity and innovation.

Math Pilots: Two new math programs currently being tested for potential district-wide implementation.

Elementary teachers were commended for their open-mindedness and dedication in embracing these new approaches, working alongside consultants to enhance instruction. Additionally, administrators were recognized for their tireless efforts in managing schedules, adapting to challenges, and supporting schools during the ongoing impacts of COVID-19.

Celebrating Student Artwork and the CTE Graphic Design Program

The meeting featured a display of artwork created by Dover High School students enrolled in the Graphic Design Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, which the board approved last year.

• Under the guidance of art teacher Mr. Mark Miagro and CCM adjunct professor Patrick Gallagher, students completed projects focusing on contour lines, perspective, and negative space as part of their Drawing 1 course.

• The program is a collaboration with County College of Morris (CCM) and prepares students with foundational skills essential for graphic design.

This program exemplifies how CTE initiatives are providing students with valuable skills for future careers.

BrightBytes Technology Survey Rollout

The district announced the upcoming rollout of the BrightBytes survey, a platform that collects feedback from teachers, students, and parents on technology use and connectivity. This survey will provide critical insights into:

• Device integration and network speed.

• Connectivity and device preferences among families.

• Overall technology experiences within the district.

During the pandemic, BrightBytes data played a vital role in addressing the digital divide, securing grant funding, and ensuring equitable access to technology. Families without devices or connectivity will have the opportunity to complete the survey at their school’s main office, ensuring all voices are heard.

Upcoming Events and Recognition

The meeting also highlighted several upcoming and ongoing events:

• Complimentary tickets were distributed for the district’s fall play, with performances scheduled for Thursday and Friday. The theater department, led by Ms. Gaynor-Matonti, was praised for its outstanding productions.

• The district is actively engaging families in nominating educators for the Governor’s Educator of the Year program, further emphasizing the importance of recognizing excellence in teaching.

Looking Ahead

As the district reflects on its progress over the past 10 weeks, it continues to focus on innovative programs, collaboration, and community involvement. From new elementary initiatives to CTE opportunities and technology enhancements, Dover is setting the stage for continued success throughout the 2021-2022 school year.
